There are several benefits to learning the proper techniques of breathing during pregnancy, which can then extend to everyday life after the birth of your child. Proper breathing can help you manage stress, help with anxiety and in such a fast paced life, let you slow down in general. During actual labor, breathing can help you deal with contractions. Importantly, proper breathing ensures that the baby is getting enough oxygen.

Here are some tips on how to practice proper abdominal breathing:

  • Find a comfortable spot that allows for good back support
  • Close your eyes and relax everything from the top of your head through your shoulders. You should feel your shoulders drop- almost as if they started at your ears!
  • Notice your natural breathing pattern
  • When ready, take a deep breath through your nose. As your lungs fill, imagine air filling your abdomen. Your belly should push forward as you inhale
  • Place a hand on your belly to check that your diaphragm is engaged as it should be
  • Through your mouth, slowly exhale. This should take at least twice as long as the inhalation

Repeat three to ten times.

Although this does not take a long time to complete, it is a nice way of giving yourself a small break during the day and maybe even some time to connect with your baby. If you have any questions on proper breathing techniques, contact us.
