Preparing for the Perfect Holiday

When you are busy preparing for your first child or raising young children it can be challenging to keep your head above water on a daily basis. Add the holiday season and the whole situation can be overwhelming; leaving you wondering how you are going to get everything done. As a mother of two and grandmother of three I would like to share some thoughts on the holidays.

Too often the season revolves around trying to create the “perfect holiday” but the “perfect holiday” only exists in Norman Rockwell’s portrayal of Thanksgiving. Too often we have unrealistic expectations of the holiday season and we play into the media with our self-imposed pressures to be the perfect mother, wife, daughter, friend, hostess, employee or employer.

Give yourself permission to relax your expectations of yourself and the holiday season. Maybe not everything on your “to do list” really needs to be done. Rest when you need to. There are extra demands on your body pre and post-partum. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Ask for help in preparing for the holidays and accept that your help may not do everything as well as you would.

Put your focus on people and creating wonderful memories, not on finding the “perfect gift” for everyone on your list.  If you have more people on your list than time, energy, and finances permit to exchange gifts with, be honest with them. Perhaps
you could agree to relax and spend time together after the holidays or to make a donation to each other’s favorite charity.

Keep meals as simple as possible and maintain a house that is “clean enough to be happy and dirty enough to be happy.” Above all, remember this time will never come again. See the holidays through the eyes of your children; revel in the wonder of the season and you will have the “perfect holiday.”
