Memorial Day is, first and foremost, a day to remember those who have died in the service of our country. With that in mind many Americans also get a chance to relax and spend time with family and friends.  With possible high temperatures (hopefully mild at least) and sunshine, it typically signals the first taste of summer. On this long weekend, a lot of people shift their mindset to taking activities and fitness outdoors. Whether you have created goals surrounding this weekend or starting new ones for the summer, it’s important to exercise safely.  Here are some great ideas for safe summer fitness!

5 Ideas for Exercise this Memorial Day Weekend

Here are 5 ideas for exercise no matter where you find yourself this weekend!

Run a 5k: Races are extremely popular this time of year, many happening in our own backyard. Check out the details for Doylestown’s Memorial Day race, celebrating it’s 25th year.

Beach trip: The beach is a great place to get a workout. Swimming in the ocean and running on the sand have great benefits. Pack a ball or a Frisbee and ask a friend to toss. What about a squat, lunge, pushup circuit right at the water’s edge or on the boardwalk? You can do 3 rounds for time.

Camping: Use the grounds for running, hiking or creating an obstacle course. Check out the campsite before you go to see if there is a body of water for swimming or stairs to run up and down.

Hiking: Whether local or traveling a distance, there are some great trails with some terrific scenery. Hills, flat, asphalt or dirt- there are plenty of choices. Look here for some great local options  and make it a goal to follow a new trail each weekend.

Scavenger hunt: Add a fitness spin on the well loved scavenger hunt. These are fun for groups of all ages and can be done at a park. Your checklist can include items to find and exercises to do once the item is found.  Have to find a ball? Once you do, do 20 squats. Need to find a kids toy? Once found, do 10 supermen. You can make the list as long as short as you want and base it on fitness level and age appropriateness.

With some variety, you can enjoy the great outdoors and still get in some exercise. It is important to remember that the heat can be dangerous especially when you exercise.

5 Tips for Exercising Safely in the Heat

Here are a few tips to help you safely exercise or enjoy outdoor activities.  A little planning will go a long way.

  1. Aim to exercise in the morning or evening,
  2. Find shade for rest and recovery periods.
  3. Hydrate! Drink half your body weight in ounces of water.
  4. Wear breathable, light weight clothing in light colors
