The beginning of the year symbolizes a fresh start for many. Coming up with resolutions, plans and “do overs” are very common on January 1st. Do you stick to your resolutions each year? If you do, you are in the minority! A high priority on many lists is exercise. The following five tips will help you create resolutions that stick throughout the year.

  1. Make small goals. Give yourself small goals during intervals through the year. One goal of “ I want to lose 20 pounds this year” might seem too big. How about something more attainable, like give yourself a monthly goal- “ I will exercise 3 times per week each week for 1 month”. This lets you work towards the bigger picture but in smaller steps.
  2.

  3. Keep your routine simple. Making a whole exercise plan that revolves around buying,   finding space, assembling etc. may make you want to quit immediately. Making a simple  plan that involves little equipment, little time and little space can help make it easier to  commit.
  4.

  5. Monitor your progress. Use a calendar, keep a journal or take pictures of your results. Seeing your success in front of you will want to make you keep going!
  6.

  7. Put it on the calendar. Schedule your workouts now for the entire year. It may sound like a lot but if you commit to exercise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday it will just become habit.
  8.

  9. Don’t give in to excuses! You might come up with 10 reasons why not to exercise that day, but chances are once you start exercising all of the excuses will go away. Your mood boosts, you’re not tired and your energy increases.
