So, here we go again and again.  More research has been done showing that consuming sweetened drinks, either regular or diet, were associated with higher risks of developing hypertension (high blood pressure).  Harvard researchers put the increased risk at 6 – 20% greater when consuming sweetened drinks (1).  In the past I’ve found studies about sugary drinks and diabetes and now hypertension is also associated with consumption.  Juice drinks that are 100% juice containing naturally occurring sugars, known as fructose, were not part of the culprits.  These findings were not influenced by family history, age, race or physical activity.  Just purely sweetened drink consumption.

What does this all mean?  Drinks with added sugars or artificial sweeteners should be consumed at a minimum if at all.  If you are going to drink any of them, drink the real thing.  And remember above all that moderation is key.
