You know the tune from the classic movie Vacation and hopefully you will be singing Holiday Road all the way to the beach! It’s time for summer vacation- some much needed relaxation and sun sitting poolside. You might be lucky enough to get out of town, but don’t let your vacation time play havoc with your workouts. It’s not a time to forget about your goals or decide you didn’t know what to do while you were away. Here are four ways to keep up with your exercise program no matter where you are.

  1. Pack it up: Without taking up too much space in your bag, you can pack mini bands, resistance bands and your workout gear. No room for bands? There are plenty of body weight exercises that don’t require equipment.
  2. Search it out: Spending time in a hotel? Check out the fitness center. Even if it’s a small room, they usually have a set of weights!
  3. On the beach: Working out on the beach is not only fun, the sand gives your body a real challenge.
  4. Get out: Leave the hotel or rental home and find trails for walking or running. Sprint between the park benches or run two miles along the waterfront.

Here’s a great beach workout- no equipment required.

“Summer Sweat”

This workout is designed to be a giant circuit, one exercise after another with little to no rest in between sets.  If you need to rest longer, feel free.

  • Run towards the water, then run backwards away from the water once.
  • Side shuffle- watch the waves while shuffling side to side for 1 minute, 30 seconds each way.
  • Squats- 50
  • Walking Lunges- 100 total in the sand
  • Pushups: Bring a beach towel and do 25
  • Plank- Hold a plank for 30 seconds then do a plank twist for another 30 seconds
  • Run on the sand for time (~10:00 minutes) or distance (1 mile)
  • Repeat the entire circuit if you still have the energy.

Remember to bring some water!

See, vacation is no excuse to ditch the workout. These workouts take only a few minutes, will give you energy and might help should you overindulge a little.  Need more ideas? Contact us for your complete vacation workout plan.
