sun

Spring is in the air! After hibernating all winter, it is time to take advantage of milder temperatures and exercise outdoors. Or even indoors, with some windows open!

The springtime is a great time for exercising outdoors because it is typically not too humid, the sun isn’t too hot and we have a couple extra hours of daylight.  So get going outdoors but remember these tips:

Hydrate. Just because it isn’t very hot out there, you still need to drink water before, during and after your workout. Aim for 17-20 oz before, 7-10 oz during and 16-24 oz after the workout.

Continue to layer and wear breathable fabrics. You still might need a couple of layers before it starts to get really warm, sot it’s better to wear more and remove the clothing then to not start with that extra layer.

Be careful of the sun. The sun might not be too hot, but it is still damaging. Don’t expose yourself for too long in the sun- a good idea might be to identify shadier areas to warm up,  cool down and rest in to make sure that you are not in the sun for too long. Remember to wear sunscreen!

When pregnant, your core temperature is already higher at the start of exercise leaving you vulnerable to heat up quickly.  This increases the risk  of developing complications with your baby. Monitor your intensity, take lots of rest breaks and make sure you are not getting overheated. Exercise responsibly while enjoying the weather!
