We have all heard the phrase “you are what you eat” from someone over the course of your life. You have probably heard it so many times that you instantly block out what they’re saying, “you are what you blah blah blah…” But does this saying hold any truth?
A recent analysis of research has shown that a diet rich in RAW fruits and vegetables can reduce the GENETIC risk of cardiovascular disease. Yes, I said it. If cardiovascular disease runs in your family then this news is for you. Raw fruits and vegetables means that they are not cooked or processed. I’ve promoted this type of eating in the past by encouraging people to both be active and eat healthy.
So, how does the consumption of raw fruits and vegetables help reduce the genetic risk of cardiovascular disease? There is a specific chromosome that shows for genetic risk for heart attack and cardiovascular disease. The effect of this healthy diet somehow weakened the chromosome’s effect. The exact mechanism is still unclear.
So, next time someone says “you are what you eat”, you can tell them that you are “a reduced risk of genetic cardiovascular disease”.
